STUDENT RESPONSIBILITIES IN THE PROCESS

FRESHMAN YEAR

- take the ERB Writing Assessment Program Test
- attend college fairs and conferences
- meet with the college representatives
- read about the High School graduation requirements (High School handbook or web page)
- be involved in extracurricular activities
- take your studies seriously and maintain a high GPA
- read as much as possible for leisure

SOPHOMORE YEAR

- take the ERB Writing Assessment Program
-  take the PSAT test
- attend college fairs and conferences
- meet with the college representatives
- if possible, attend a summer program abroad
- plan carefully the courses for the junior and senior years with your counselor
- read about the High School graduation requirements (High School handbook or web page)
- be involved in extracurricular activities
- take your studies seriously and maintain a high GPA
- read as much as possible for leisure 

JUNIOR YEAR

- retake the PSAT test
- take the SAT preparation classes
- register for the May and June SAT I test and/or for the ACT test and for three SAT II Subject tests on June
- register for the TOEFL and/or IELTS tests
-check the Bulletin Boards and college websites for all information about Brazilian tests
- register for the ENEM (Exame Nacional do Ensino Médio) and “Vestibular” exams
- if possible, attend a summer program abroad
- attend college fairs and conferences
- meet with the college representatives
- write to colleges for catalogues or view books
- start your college research by visiting the Guidance Office
- communicate with your parents and guidance counselor
- complete your junior year college questionnaire and finalize your list of at least eight colleges by May 15
- be realistic about college expectations
- talk with Chapel's graduates who are already in colleges
- be involved in extracurricular activities

 
SENIOR YEAR

- observe test registration deadlines and register for the SAT I, SAT II and TOEFL tests
- create a file to keep all the application materials organized
- make a list of the application deadlines
- work on your final list of colleges and discuss it with your counselor
- be realistic about college expectations
- acquire and fill out applications in a timely manner (most of the colleges and universities have their applications on the web).
- start working on your essay in September
- detach the secondary school reports that are part of your application, and bring them to the Guidance Office by September
- make copies of the applications and of everything you send to colleges
- include a check or money order for each application (if you are applying on line, then you will need a credit card number)
- if you intend to use the common application, be aware that some colleges will request supplemental forms
- have your SAT, ACT and TOEFL scores sent directly from the test agency to all colleges to which you are applying
- if you are an international student, provide a certification of finances for each college (be aware that the certification of finances usually takes three weeks to be processed at the bank)
- students need to make a written request to teachers for their recommendations; you must give at least three weeks' notice if you expect them to write on your behalf
- set an appointment with the Guidance Office secretary before November 10 in order to process all the application packages
- follow up communication and requests from colleges in a timely manner

GUIDANCE OFFICE STAFF RESPONSIBILITIES

- meet individually with the students
- help students in their college research process
- provide information about the admission process in Brazil and abroad
- schedule the visits of college representatives and provide students with information about the visiting colleges
- have college and career handbooks, magazines, and videos available for students and parents
- distribute SAT and TOEFL bulletins
- write recommendations and fill out the SECONDARY SCHOOL REPORT from the applications
- process the application packages, providing school transcripts, school profile and school recommendation
- report the candidate's disciplinary action or academic status changes to colleges
- send information about the CSS Profile and FAFSA for American citizen parents

 
PARENTS' RESPONSIBILITIES

- participate in their son's/daughter's application process (due dates)
- be realistic about college expectations
- hold student accountable for meeting responsibilities
- help student with arranging visits and interviews at colleges
- work together with the counselor to help their son/daughter find their best college match
 

TEACHERS' RESPONSIBILITY

- fill out teacher recommendation forms and send them directly to the Guidance Office
