Senior’s Responsibilities in the College Counseling Process
1st Semester
· Create a file to keep all the application materials organized
· Work on your final list of colleges and discuss it with D. Ingrid
· Be realistic about expectations
· Acquire and fill out applications in a timely manner. Most of the colleges and universities have their applications on the web and you will be able to download them
· Attend meetings with college representatives
· Make copies of the applications and of everything you send to colleges
· Include a check or money order for each application
· If you are applying online, then you will need a credit card number
· If you intend to use the common application, bring us a copy for each college (including the secondary school report). Be aware that some colleges will request supplemental forms.
· Observe application deadlines carefully
· Observe test registration deadlines and register for the SAT I, SAT II and TOEFL tests
· Have your SAT, ACT, and TOEFL scores sent directly from the test agency to all colleges to which you are applying
· Write your essay; essays should be student’s own work
· Provide a certification of finances for each college. Be aware that the certification of finances usually takes three weeks to be processed at the bank
· Students need to make a written request to teachers for their recommendations; you must give a least three weeks’ notice if you expect them to write on your behalf
· Detach the Secondary School Reports that are part of your application, and bring them to the Guidance Office before October 15
· Set an appointment with the Guidance Office secretary before November 10 in order to process all the application packages
· Mail your packages to schools you are considering
· Follow up communication and requests from colleges in a timely manner
· Take a “Vestibular” exam
· Register for the ENEM (Exame Nacional do Ensino Médio)
Juniors’ Responsibilities in the College Counseling Process
· Take the SAT preparation classes
· Attend conferences with college representatives
· Start your college research by visiting the Guidance Office
· Communicate with your parents and guidance counselor
· Plan summer visits to colleges and interviews
· Write to colleges for catalogues or view books
· Visit college fairs
· Complete your junior year college questionnaire and finalize your list of colleges by May 15
· Register for the December and May SAT I test and / or for the ACT test
· Be realistic about expectations
· Get involved in activities
· Talk with Chapel’s graduates who are in college
· Register for the ENEM
Sophomores’ Responsibilities in the College Process
· Get involved in activities
· Take your studies seriously and maintain high grades
· Talk about your Junior Schedule with your counselor and try to select the most rigorous courses that you can handle successfully
· Take the October PSAT test
· Visit college fairs
Guidance Office Staff Responsibilities
· Meet with the students individually
· Help students in their college research process
· Educate students about the admissions process
· Announce test registration deadlines
· Schedule the visits of college representatives and provide students with information about the visiting colleges
· Have college and career handbooks, magazines, and videos available for students and parents
· Distribute SAT and TOEFL bulletins
· Write recommendations and fill out the SECONDARY SCHOOL REPORT
· Process the application packages, providing school transcripts, school profile and school recommendations
· Report the candidate’s disciplinary action or academic status changes to colleges
· Send information about the CSS Profile and FAFSA for American citizens parents
· Help students with their schedules
Parents’ Responsibilities
· Support and participates in the son’s / daughter’s application process (due dates)
· Communicate with your sons / daughters and school counselor
· Be realistic about expectations
· Hold student accountable for meeting responsibilities
· Help students with arranging visits and interviews at colleges
· Keep in touch with college counselors
· Know that counselors support your children and want the best for them
Teachers’ Responsibilities
· Fill out teacher recommendation forms and send them directly to the guidance office
